🏔️ Unmissable hikes in the Mecsek

1. Óbánya Valley hike – The magical world of the “Hungarian Switzerland”

📍 Route: Óbánya – Kisújbánya – Cigány-hegy – Réka-kunyhó – Óbánya
👣 Distance: 14 km
⏳ Duration: 5 hours
📈 Elevation gain: 350 m
⭐ Difficulty: Moderate

The Óbánya Valley is one of the most beautiful hiking areas in Hungary, also known among hikers as the “Hungarian Switzerland” . The path winds along a stream the whole way, with picturesque waterfalls and karst formations. The Ferde Waterfall and the Csepegő Rock are special sights of the valley, where babbling water and green forests guarantee a close-to-nature experience.

Along the way we pass through Kisújbánya, a secluded Swabian village where time seems to have stood still. From here the path leads to the Cigány-hegy lookout , which offers a wonderful panorama of the Mecsek.


2. Summit hike to Zengő – The highest point of the Mecsek

📍 Route: Hosszúhetény – Zengő – Püspökszentlászló – Hosszúhetény
👣 Distance: 10 km
⏳ Duration: 4 hours
📈 Elevation gain: 390 m
⭐ Difficulty: Moderate

The highest point of the Mecsek, Zengő (682 m) , is a must for hikers. The path to the summit has some steep climbs, but the panorama from the lookout tower is worth every effort. On a clear day you can even see Badacsony and the Drava plain.

In spring the hillsides are covered with Banat peonies – one of the rarest protected plants in Hungary. At the end of the hike it is worth stopping in Püspökszentlászló, where the arboretum and the historic bishop’s palace provide a wonderful setting for a rest.


3. Égervölgy circular hike – Through the legendary places of the Mecsek

📍 Route: Égervölgy – Farkas-forrás – Pálos kolostor – Zsongor-kő – Égertető – Égervölgy
👣 Distance: 11 km
⏳ Duration: 4 hours
📈 Elevation gain: 467 m
⭐ Difficulty: Moderate

This is one of the most varied routes, dotted with lakes, lookouts and historic sites. Lake Égervölgy offers a romantic setting, while the Zsongor-kő lookout is one of the best viewpoints in the Mecsek. Along the way you can also see the ruins of the Pauline monastery , which recall the Middle Ages.

1. Forest bike tour between Orfű and Abaliget

📍 Route: Pécs – Orfű – Abaliget – Cserkút – Pécs
🚴 Distance: 58 km
⏳ Duration: 6–7 hours

The route runs past the picturesque lakes of Orfű and then reaches Abaliget, famous for its cave . The Árpád-era church of Cserkút and the rolling hills of the Mecsek make this challenging bike tour unforgettable.
